History

Founded in 1890, Security Storage Company of Washington has exemplified "Innovation in Motion" since its early beginnings. Today, strengthened by its deep roots in the past and an ongoing commitment to innovation, Security continues to not only change with the times, but to anticipate and lead the industry in the ever-changing world.

1890

Founded in 1890, Security is one of the oldest and most experienced international relocation companies in the world.

1890

Established one of the first commercial fireproof warehouses in the US.

1895

One of the first storage companies in the world to build refrigerated vaults for the safe storage of furs during the summer.

1897

Security writes the very first marine insurance policy to cover an overseas shipment of household effects from Washington, DC, to London, England.

1910's

Security joins the Rotary Club of Washington and the Downtown Kiwanis Club, beginning its long commitment to active community involvement and responsible corporate citizenship.

1926

Security develops a network of overseas agents for door-to-door shipments.

1927

Security manufactures a fleet of permanent steel containers to be used worldwide.

1928

A pioneer in the interstate van line concept, Security assists in establishing Allied Van Lines to support independent movers in return load capacity and to expand service areas.

1941

Security moves the Mellon and Widener collections into the National Gallery of Art.

1950

Security is a founding member of FIDI (Fédération Internationale des Déménageurs Internationaux). Today, FIDI consists of over 800 agents worldwide. In 1953 Security also institutes the USA section of FIDI.

1961

Federal Forwarding Company is established as Security's wholly owned subsidiary freight forwarding operation.

1978

Security initiates the Certified Moving Consultant (CMC) program of the American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA). The CMC credential represents a fundamental competency and adherence to ethical conduct for the moving and storage industry.

1984

Security plays an important role in the renovation of Blair House, the President’s Guest House.

1985

Security is a founding member of Overseas Moving Network International (OMNI). OMNI strictly enforces membership criteria in terms of total quality management, operational ability, and financial stability.

1988

Security becomes an owner/shareholding agent of United Van Lines. United has been the largest van line since 1990. Over 450 of the Fortune 500 companies have a contract carriage agreement signed with United Van Lines.

1990's

Security receives the United Van Lines Customer Choice Award five times. This award is only given to a few United Van Lines agents on an annual basis and is based solely on customers' evaluation survey results.

1995

Security is the first moving and storage company in the Washington metropolitan area to receive ISO 9000 certification and the second moving and storage company in North America.

1999

The Association of the Oldest Inhabitants of the District of Columbia honors Security with its Business Legend Award.

1999

Security is first in the world to receive FAIMISO certification. The FAIM/ISO (FIDI Accredited International Mover/ISO) program is the most thorough and rigorous audit of a company's approach to quality processes in the international moving industry. It is independently audited by Ernst & Young.

2001

Security accepts the United Van Lines President's Quality Award. This award is United highest award for quality performance, naming Security as the #1 agent in the nation.

2001

Security supports the creation of The First Tee of Greater Washington, dedicated to teaching life values – honesty, integrity, and golf to underprivileged children and providing them access to places to continue and play the game. This program also ties into children’s grades.

2002

Security opens the first 20 foot steel container warehouse in the world, outside of five in Europe, adjacent to Washington Dulles International Airport. Still the only one outside of Europe, the facility provides the most secure fireproof storage facility utilizing less energy, space and resources anywhere and offers a business model for U.S. based moving and storage companies.

2003

Security achieves Exemplary Environmental Enterprise status in Virginia in recognition our facility has a fully implemented environmental management system, a pollution prevention program and a record of sustained compliance.

2003

Security becomes the first company to sweep all national safety awards given by AMSA. These awards are based on Department of Transportation statistics for the household goods industry and are proof of strong focus on protecting the public by operating first class equipment with first class drivers dedicated to safe and courteous driving within the letter of the law.

2003

The National Capital Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society names Security Corporation of the Year, honoring our dedication to giving back to the community in which we live and work.

2003

Security attains ISO 14000 certification, setting an example for our industry, a significant user of natural resources including fuel, paper and wood products.

2004

Security starts to purchases hybrid cars to replace company cars. These cars, like the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight, average 60 miles per gallon, saving fuel and minimizing fuel costs.

2004

Security sponsors the National Maritime Heritage Foundations Kids Set Sail Regatta to raise funds to teach children life skills and teamwork through sailing.
